Hob’s review of The Blood Mirror by Brent Weeks

I love Brent Weeks’s books. His Night Angel series if a favorite of mine. I actually have it in 4 different forms. Paperback, Kindle, Audiobook, and Graphic Audio.

So when I started this series I had mixed feelings. I loved the magic system, It is literally one of the best I have ever read about. The Idea of a ruler that lived for  multiples 7 years was ok but has been done before. Gavin and IronFist are awesome but they were  the only ones I liked at first. Karris was a bitch, Teia  was annoying. Kip the lip, well I hated his whiny  fat aaa ….um I mean.  I disliked his whimpering corpulent posterior.

But let’s look at the first thing I mentioned that I liked the most, the magic system. Chromaturgy involves the harnessing of light energy and converting it to matter, a substance called Luxin. That is a cool idea.

Now lets Science this bitch!

In my opinion Chromaturgy is theoretically possible if we take into account the relationship of energy and mater described by the Planck constant denoting the linear momentum of a particle,  not only of photons, but as atoms as well. For example, green light with a wavelength of 555 nanometres has a frequency of 540 THz (540×1012 Hz). Each photon has an energy E = hf = 3.58×10−19 J.  That is not much energy, but If it was possible to stop a photon before it hits something, you would have all of  that energy that is inherently wasted when a photon hits an object letting us see it. Once the Photon is stopped it would turn back to a solid particle. Then if  you could compress the atoms  you would have Green Luxin. Isn’t that so cool? I hope you got all that there will be a test.

You want to know something even cooler?

I think using the concepts  in Planck’s constant, Mass renormalization  and ultraviolet divergence.  combined with quantum electrodynamics

It is theoretically possible the Prism would have the ability to time travel!

OK let’s just take a second to appreciate the awesome I just said…………

Alright  now we get back to this book, the Blood Mirror. It is the fourth book in the series. Let’s take a look at the people I mentioned at the beginning, and look how they are doing now. Gavin has lost a lot. That includes body parts. He is down a few fingers an eye and all his magic. But he is still Awesome. Ironfist we hardly see at all in this book which kind of sucked. Karris I am starting to like. Teia   is still annoying but getting better. And Kip… Well he was pretty damn cool in this book. I think I actually like him now, and I never thought I would say that.

This is definitely the best book of the series and in the top 3 or 4 of the year for me.  Simon Vance did a Fantastic job with the audiobook. I am going to have to give The Blood Mirror

5 out of 5 stars

  1. Totally loved how you science-ed the whole magic system, I did it too but never got down to the physics and it’s constants. Will agree probably the best magic system I have read so far, also probably the one which is most theoretically possible.
