Book Haul + A Giveaway

October Was a great month for books, at least it was for me. So of course I am going to spread the love a bit and have a giveaway! But before we get to that let me show you what I was lucky enough to get my  grubby little goblin hands on.

  1. The Midnight Dunes (The Landkist Saga #3) by Steven Kelliher

Steven sent over an E-ARC of the third book in his Landkist saga. I don’t know if his time as a UFC fighter helped but the battle scenes in this series are written very well. Go pick up a copy of Valley of Embers if you haven’t already got it.

  1. Black Guild (Black Powder Wars, #2) by JP. Ashman

My Cactus loving goblin buddy sent me the digital ARC for his eagerly awaited second installment in his fantastic flintlock fantasy series the Black Powder Wars.  Check out the new cover Pen Astridge aka The Mighty Pen just finished for book one.

  1. The Infernal Battalion (The Shadow Campaigns #5) by Django Wexler

I have to thank the publisher (Ace)  for this one.  I admit I already finished this a few days ago. This has been a great series from the start and to be honest this is the best one yet! One of the most satisfying series ends that I have read in years.

by Adrian Collins, Mark Alder, R. Scott Bakker, Bradley P. Beaulieu, Michael R. Fletcher, T. Frohock , Alex Marshall, Peter Orullian, Jeff Salyards, Courtney Schafer, Shawn Speakman ,Brian Staveley, Adrian Tchaikovsky, Marc Turner, Matthew Ward, Kaaron Warren, Mazarkis Williams, Deborah A. Wolf, Janny Wurts, E.V. Morrigan

I backed this as a Kickstarter last year and received my beautiful hardcover copy a few weeks ago. Then last week I got a magical mystery paperback in the mail. Neither  I nor Adrian know why I got it but since I don’t need 2 of them…. Yup you guessed correctly this is the giveaway!

Open to all. Just comment below to enter . While not necessary to share this post it is appreciated! You don’t need to have a wordpress.com account to comment but it will ask for an email. I don’t care if you give a made up email but if you are the randomly selected winner you will have 24 hours to respond to the notice I send you. After that I will randomly select someone else. The contest will end and the winner will be chosen Friday the first of December.

Good Luck!

Interview with Deborah A. Wolf

In my continuing Have an author for dinner™ Interview series We will be chatting with new Grimdark Royalty, Debra A. Wolf .  I have not read her book, THE DRAGON’S LEGACY yet, but have heard such wonderful things about it. I had to ask her over for a Bite. How do I know she is Grimdark Royalty if I haven’t read her book yet? Good question. Short answer We are Facebook Friends. The Long answer is…..  Well you will see soon enough.

Q) Have you always wanted to be a writer?

A)  No. It took four years of drinking milk, learning to walk and use the potty, and then read before I finally decided what I wanted to do with my life.

Q) What books or authors do you feel have influenced you either in your writing or just in everyday life?

A) Tolkien, of course. Madeline L’Engle. Steinbeck. Victor Hugo, Anne Rice, Stephen King, whose book On Writing is really important to me as much for the author’s must-have life lessons as it is for actual writing advice. He reminds us not to get so wrapped up in the destination that we don’t enjoy our journey.

Q) What is your favorite quote of yours?

A) “Hafsa Azeina was no ordinary woman. She waded through the people’s dreams like a jiinberry farmer in shallow waters, plucking the ripe fruit of fertile dreamings. Some of this harvest was hoarded for later, some was sold at market, and some—Ani was certain of this last, though she had never asked outright—some of the dreams were eaten fresh, staining the lips and fingertips and the soul of the woman who ate them with their dark, sweet juices.”

Q) Any favorite quote by someone else?

A) “In a hole in the ground, there lived a Hobbit.” ~Tolkien

Q). What is your favorite and least favorite part of the writing process?

A) My favorite part is when a random brainstorming session ties together something that cropped up out of the nether two years ago with no context or explanation, but which I included because I knew somehow it was important and that the spiders would whisper their answers to me sooner or later.

A) The silence between those times. Because you know those feckin’ spiders are stalking you.

Q) I asked you this in your AMA on Reddit. The response was ….scary, I would love for you to tell us a little about one of your main characters? Do they have any Strong Political views, OCD habits, super powers, Homicidal sentient weapons? You know the usual type of things.

A) Hm, I’ll pick Hafsa Azeina for this one, because she’s the character most like me.

Hafsa Azeina is a dreamshifter; she kills her enemies in their sleep and uses their body parts to make musical instruments. She’s also got a possessed dagger that would love to eat her soul, and a shofar made from a horn of the Golden Ram.

(Yes, that Golden Ram).

She’s a mom, and not overly fond of goat cheese.

Q) Describe your book Badly. Example Star-Wars deadbeat dad tries to get his son to take over the family business.

A) Parasitic life forms react with panic as their giant lizard host wakes.

Q) Your book hits shelves when?

A) April 18, 2017

Q) What are you working on now?

A) THE DRAGON’S LEGACY 2: THE FORBIDDEN CITY. This book is going to knock your feckin’ socks off.

Q) Where can my curious goblins find out more about you?

Any Final words?

Hold my whiskey and watch this.

Thank you so much Deborah  for stopping by and showing the goblins how to kill with your book. Looks like they are riding into battle with it now.

Warchief Ripnugget

There you Have it readers. That is why I called her Grimdark Royalty.  The terrifyingly adorable Deborah A. Wolf. Hob’s Review of Use The Force: A Jedi’s Guide to the Law of Attraction by Joshua P Warren

Use The Force: A Jedi’s Guide to the Law of Attraction

by Joshua P Warren

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I agreed to take a look at this book based solely on the name. So I obviously liked the title. The cover could use some help though. It is just letters on a Hyperspace background.

While not quite what I was expecting it was still interesting. So what was I expecting?  Hmm well I figured by the end of the book I would be able to pull my Light saber out of the Ice while hanging upside-down in a cave obviously.

I am sad to say I would still be Wampa Chow™ in the unlikely but still possible event of my capture by a giant ice monster.

But I still need to remember that a Jedi’s strength flows from the Force. But beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan’s apprentice Bob.

“I am  not the skull you are looking for…”

Even with you wearing the Vader helmet It still doesn’t work Bob. Sorry.

OK where was I? Oh yeah this book has some pretty cool ideas at its core, but it soon got a bit to new age-y for me  I kept saying to myself “Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.” Yes i sometimes refer to myself as kid. But not when I am actually talking to people, only when I am talking to myself. Its not like I am crazy or anything…. Geez.

“I find your lack of faith disturbing.”

Ok Bob I get it The Force is strong with you. A powerful Sith you will become. Henceforth, you shall be known as Darth… BOB. The most feared skull in the universe.

The other thing I didn’t really like was the statistical info dumps. While yes they were of interesting facts too much time was spent explaining what they were all about.

“Sir, the possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field is approximately 3,720 to 1.”

Thanks Bob but never tell me the odds I don’t like a lot of statistics either.

Final Thoughts

It was basically a Star Wars themed course on positive thinking and how that can effect everything around you. I agree with that part of it, although I feel I didn’t need  the advice.

If you are the type to read self help books I think this one could be a good choice. I like what it is trying to show I am just not in need of it. The thing that really gets to me though is that  however hard I think about something I need, I will never be able to make it come to me. And that is just depressing when you stop to think about it. I give Use The Force: A Jedi’s Guide to the Law of Attraction  by Joshua P Warren 3.25 stars for me but you can check it out yourself for free with Kindle Unlimited at this link.Kindle Edition3 and 1 q

“I’ve been waiting for you, Hobi-Wan. We meet again, at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you, I was but the learner; now I am the master.”

OH give it a rest BOB!

“The hate is swelling in you now.  Take your Jedi weapon. Use it. I am unarmed. Strike me down with it. Give in to your anger. With each passing moment you make yourself more my servant.

For god’s sake Bob shut up!

“Good, I can feel your anger. I am defenseless. Take your weapon. Strike me down with all of your hatred and your journey towards the dark side will be complete!”

I give up Bob you win…….

“Everything that has transpired has done so according to my design.”

I think I need to go now and cry because I still can’t force push  things, like skulls, away from me with a thought..

Well it has been a busy month for me already and it is only half over. 2 of the books that should be on this list I have already finished. Red Sister by Mark Lawrence and Circle of Reign by Jacob Cooper. Both earned 5 stars from me so off to a great start for the year.  I have received 5 emails in the past 2 days by authors asking me to read their books. I am not going to mention names because I haven’t looked through them all. But a few sound really cool. I will post more about them next month.

When I separated from my wife last year she did the worst thing ever and threw some of my books away. Only 2 boxes but a lot of my Wheel of Time books. Last week  I found these at Goodwill

So my Wheel of Time Collection is almost complete again.

I also received a few E-ARCs that I am excited to get to.

I am sure I have mentioned that I like to meet authors and get things signed. But I wanted to show you a few pages out of my Autograph book.

The reason I am showing you this is because I got a new one. It is right out of Skyrim, and I think its pretty damn cool.

And now the Coolest things I have got all year. I mean within the last 365 days when I say that. I got some downright awesome Doodles.

J.P.’s is above and beyond what I expected, but the amount of time Laura must have spent staring at one of my graphics I can only imagine. I love them both. So I made a new cover combining both of your books.

And here is Laura’s goblin running away with Mr.Ashman’s Cacti.

The poor cacti looks Terrified…….

With their army of Silver Spears, their elite company of Blade Maidens and their holy defenders, the terrifying asirim, the Kings uphold their positions as undisputed, invincible lords of the desert. There is no hope of freedom for any under their rule.Or so it seems, until Çeda, a brave young woman from the west end slums, defies the Kings’ laws by going outside on the holy night of Beht Zha’ir. What she learns that night sets her on a path that winds through both the terrible truths of the Kings’ mysterious history and the hidden riddles of her own heritage. A confession an Infomercial and a Giveaway

I have a deep dark secret to tell you all. I am embarrassed to say this, but the first step to recovery is to admit you have a problem right?

****Trust me I am going somewhere with this*****

Well Here I am admitting I have a problem. I am addicted to books…..Sob….. There I said it! I feel so much better now.  I love my Kindle and all the hundreds of books I have on it. But it is so hard to get them Autographed.  I actually did find a way to do it and I think it looks good, but I am running out of wall space now.

Since I am exposing all of my obvious yet dark secrets Today  The real pride and joy of my collection would be my Autographed first editions.  Pictured bellow. Now I prefer to not have the dust jackets on. It just looks so much better without them, I think. The red book in the center and the one to its right are the same book but the one on the right still has the dust jacket on.

****Almost there I can see my point ahead****

I just bought a Leather-bound and gold leaf special edition of Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson I paid $100

That is really cool and I can’t wait to show it off to the 1’s of people that visit me. But I don’t think it will ever go far from my shelf. But what if you had something that looked as nice but you could use for any book. To protect on the shelf or as something you carried with you. Well now you can! With a custom hand burned wooden Book cover made just for you and your favorite book!

Holidays are supposed to be a time of joy and celebration, For families to come together and share the love they have for each other. But for most people it is a time of stress and panic. We have forgotten the true Original meaning of Christmas.

“So what is the Original meaning of Christmas?”

Great question! To answer that we need to take a small jump back in time. Back before it was called Christmas, back before the time of Christ back to a time  when it was  called Saturnalia.

Saturnalia was a week long period of Parting till you drop. Celebrated between December 17-25.  During this period, Roman courts were closed, and Roman law said that no one could be punished for anything they did..  The festival began when Romans chose  “an enemy”.  Each community selected one whom they forced to indulge in food and other physical pleasures throughout the week. On December 25th, They would “destroy the forces of darkness” by brutally  murdering the innocent man or woman they had chosen to be the “enemy” .

“That seams A bit different than it is now.” You know something, I think you may be right.

In the 4th century CE, Christianity imported the Saturnalia festival hoping to convert the pagan masses with it, by promising them that they could continue to celebrate the Saturnalia as Christians.. The earliest Christmas holidays were celebrated by drinking, sexual indulgence, singing naked in the streets (a precursor of modern caroling) and human sacrifice.

Christmas was actually kinda like a week long Purge movie. So let’s get back to the true meaning of Christmas and sacrifice someone! A little too far?

Well how about instead of committing horrors we give some Horror…. and some Humor.

Old Saint NiCthulas himself also known as C.T. Phipps is going to give away some presents to you folks. The Gobie award winning Cthulhu Armageddon and the hilarious Rules of Supervillainy Audiobooks.
