Q. How do you rate the books you review.
A. I am not that technical about it but I rate on a scale of 1/4th of a star to 5 stars. I should just do 1 to 10 stars or something, but that would just confuse the reviews on Goodreads and Amazon. For the reviews on those websites, say a book is 3.75 stars I would usually round it up to 4 stars
Q. OK now I know what scale you use to rate books. But how does A book actually get placed on that scale?
A. Great question. Basically if I finished it, it will get 2, 3, or 4 stars depending on how much I enjoyed it. Then i add or take away points for certain things. More than a few typos or grammatical errors loses at least -1/2 a star. No Typos and its +1/2 star. So a 5 star book review would have to be something I really enjoyed plus no typos and good printing quality and a nice cover.
Q. What about Audiobooks?
A. If it’s a Audiobook I start with the same basic scale the pacing and voice range are important but the main thing that loses points for me is if I hear swallowing or other noises.
A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire #1) by George R.R. Martin
received 4.75 stars because the cover was not that great. But that was the only thing wrong with it.
The audiobook just barely got 4 stars because of Roy Dotrice as a narrator. You could hear him clear his throat all the time and he made everyone sound like a 90 year old man with emphysema. And who wants to hear Arya Stark sound like she needs to kick her 4 pack a day smoking habit she has had since she learned to crawl?
So glad someone else agrees about the GoT cover haha. It is always nice to take time to read rating guidelines for others. Great post 🙂
