Hob’s review of Writers of the Future Vol 32

Writers of the Future Vol 32by David Farland (Goodreads Author) (Editor), L. Ron Hubbard, Tim Powers, Brandon Sanderson (Goodreads Author), Jon Lasser (Goodreads Author), Matt Dovey (Goodreads Author)

I was really excited when I got this from Netgally I like the series a lot and love how it supports and promotes new writers.  I always look forward to the writing about writing more then the stories. But I am crazy  and like to know about how the stories came to be.  In this edition the Writing Advice was by Brandon Sanderson. He has been my favorite author for the last few years. I wanted to read that part real quick so I skipped to it. I soon came to these lines..20161109_212544

I swear I spent 10 minutes just reading those two lines over again and again trying to figure out what he was trying to say. How is a new writer at the cusp of the fine distinction between cooks and Chefs?

I just didn’t get it. So I finally just went to the next page and it started with “Grand journey- a journey we have all taken.” So then I finally figured it out. The line should have said “the cusp of a Grand Journey“, But where do cooks and chefs come in to the picture you ask?  Once again, my friend, you ask the perfect question! Well it turns out they come into the picture about 2 pages later.

So after I finished that piece I turned back to the beginning (I just metaphorically turned it, it is a E-reader so literally turning it just makes it hard to read.)  Anyhow I made it back to the beginning of the book and saw more and more problems with things .

Extra spaces in words, random words or author names in the middle of paragraphs and words like “IN” on a page by itself but each letter on different lines.

By now you must be calling me an Idiot for not realizing it was a formatting issue and re downloading it.  First of all this is a safe place, so no name calling! Second I did re-download it three or four times. Always the same problem.

I was about to give up on it, That’s when I noticed I was now able to Download a Pdf. version. ( I had tried that first so I could see the art better but it was locked then.) After skimming through the Pdf. I am happy to say it looked fine. I soon breezed through the rest of the book.

Now as for the book itself, I liked it, for the most part. Reviewing an anthology can be hard. Some stories I liked more then others. One  I just didn’t like and one I didn’t finish.

But for an anthology of new writers It was good. The art in it was fantastic. And the How to drive a writer crazy in 10 steps was my favorite part of the book. I think I will try a few of the Ideas. I am going to rate this 3 stars out of five.

I received a free copy of this book from Netgally.com in exchange for my honest review.
